I wonder if it’s a printer setting? The reason I ask is that in Acrobat Professional (which is effectively a printer driver for producing PDFs), you can set a watermark independently of Word. You say you only see this on ONE printer and that you’ve only had that printer for a month. I suspect Word 2004 for Mac is based on Word 2003 for Windows, which did not have XML options.
